Blue and gold Dedicated to my beloved mother, Mary Elizabeth Setzler, who bravely battled cancer for two years. The blue represents my sadness when she passed on August 12, 2006. The gold represents the love my mother gave to me; a love that will last forever. Mary was an avid and gifted quilter who inspired me to begin quilting. She spent countless hours hand sewing all her quilts and then she gave them to loved ones, friends, and children. With every stitch I think of her and I know she would be so proud of the many quilts I now have made and given to children with diabetes.
My vibrant Rose Dedicated to my daughter, Elizabeth Rose, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the tender age of 4. Elizabeth is a lively, vibrant child, with colorful antics that continually delight me and her siblings. Her courage inspires me daily and it was Elizabeth's idea to begin Islets of Hope because she believed that "we should help other children with diabetes."
If you swim, you won't drown Dedicated to the millions of people world-wide who have diabetes. I created this quilt because having diabetes seems like drifting in the wide-open ocean with no land in site. You know, or at least hope land is somewhere, so you keep struggling. When I was feeling overwhelmed by sugar checks and crashes and basal adjustments, I would work on a fish. Each fish was hand appliqued piece by piece and it gave me time to think a lot about how fish must remain in almost constant motion to survive. I came away from this quilt felling that diabetes can only "drown" you in sorrow when you give up. So keep swimming; keep moving forward! Created by Lahle Wolfe (type 2 diabetes), 2006 |
